Not Playing Opossum

So, there are many days when I think Daisy's blog post is going to be about one thing and it turns into something completely different.  This is one of those posts.
I sat down to start the post and this was on my screen.
I had a feeling Daisy was on my desk while I was doing errands today!  So, I got my camera to take a picture.  Daisy was in the backyard and started barking.  She barks at her toys and I thought that was what she was doing.  She stops when I tell her to come in.  She didn't stop, only got louder.  I turned around in my chair and saw this...

I started taking pictures and calling "Daisy, cookie" at the same time. Can you tell she was thinking cookie or live toy? Tough decision!

 One last look...
We watched it from the safety zone (inside) for an hour!!  It just stared at us.  I may or may not have looked up "juvenile opossums without tails" while we watched.  I think the opossum may have fallen off the fence and took the pennants I have hanging up there when it dropped.

It finally moseyed around the backyard as Daisy and I watched through the windows (it does have a tail). It went under the fence into my 'middle yard' and couldn't get out to the front yard.  I opened the gate and put a slice of apple on the other side.  It took another 30 minutes to go into the front yard and freedom.
I also had a baby skunk at my school this week that took a nap in a student's backpack.  It's starting to feel like Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom around here.

Oh, one thing about turtles...I had to learn how to give turtles antibiotic shots because one of my parents' dogs thought it made great play toys.  The vet told me a lot of dogs think the same thing!  The turtles are fine and safely fenced in (away from the dogs).

  1. Giving turtles shots...that's a new one!

That opossum looks very scary. Good thing you kept your distance Daisy....But you did the right thing letting it know that it's YOUR yard!

  7. Hi there. Stopping by from Jazzi's blog. We signed up for the Christmas Card exchange and saw you wrote a comment about it being your first year. This is the first year we signed up for the Christmas card exchange. Anyway we just stopped by to say hi. We saw this post you wrote about the possum. We saw a possum in our yard about a year ago. I (Lassie the Sheltie) called it a "Cat-Rat" because the head looks like a cat and the tail looks like a rat. Anyway it was nice meeting you and reading some of your blog posts.
