Summer Reading With Daisy: McDuff Goes To School

It's hard to believe, but it's back to school time in our house!  My last book for the summer is McDuff Goes To School by Rosemary Wells and illustrated by Susan Jeffers.  McDuff is the Westie and Marie is the Scottie.  

Before I get to the story, I just had to show you this page.  Terriers are awesome and so cute!

McDuff gets a new neighbor from France!  She even barks in French!  

So, this page is a little worrisome.  Marie got in trouble for getting on the fancy furniture.  I sleep on the couch all the time.  Now, if this was a picture of Marie getting on the counter, I get it.  I know I'm not supposed to be on the counter, but I still do it.  But the comfy couch? Yikes. Marie's parents decided she had to go to school to learn how to behave.  McDuff's parents thought he should go as well.

The pups had a lot of homework to do from their school.  They even had to take a final!

A fun part of this book is the Glossary at the end.  They show what McDuff and Marie learned in French (with the pronunciation) and then defined in English.

Flower Friday

Daisy and I wanted to show off my parents Plumeria tree. Daisy likes to sniff the flowers that fall during the night. 

It reaches their second story!

The look on Daisy's face cracked me up! It's like the leaves are going to get her!

Summer Reading With Daisy: The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry,and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR

I know how much you all love strawberries, which is why I picked this book!  I even brought it to a real strawberry patch to tell you all about it.  The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR is by Don and Audrey Wood.  They are amazing authors and illustrators.  

So, this little mouse finds the most perfect and juicy strawberry.

He knows all about the BIG HUNGRY BEAR and decides to protect this ripe strawberry. 

He tries to hide it and chain it up so the bear can't get it. 

The little mouse thinks even eating a little bit will prevent the bear from eating the perfect strawberry!

Well, I'm not going to tell you the twist with the mouse, strawberry, and the bear.  It's the best part of the story and I don't want to spoil it for you!  I will say this book makes you want to eat your very own red ripe strawberry after you finish it!

Flower Friday

We had a cooler than usual morning, so Daisy and I spent it cleaning up the yard.  Just about everything got a summer buzz.  Daisy did her part by 'collecting' all the nursery pots to be recycled.

We wanted to show you these beautiful flowers.  We love the bright, contrasting colors.  They will die off in about a week, take a little break, then produce another round.

Summer Reading With Daisy: Purple, Green, and Yellow

If you have been in any store this week, you know it's time for school supply soiree!  We LOVE school supplies in this house.  They all smell so delicious to me, which is why they are locked up in the guest room. This week's story is another one by Robert Munsch.  In honor of all the new school supplies, I bring you Purple, Green, and Yellow.

Brigid begs her mom for new markers.  The same kind all her friends have.  Of course, her mom buys them for her.  When reading this book to first graders, this is the time to remind them they don't have to have everything their friends have.  The mom is concerned Brigid will draw on the walls or the floor or herself.  Brigid promises she won't.

 So, Brigid colors for awhile and decides she now needs the "super duper never come off markers till your dead and maybe even later" markers. 

Well, those markers looked better than real life colors!  They were so colorful that Brigid couldn't help herself.  She started with her thumb nail, which lead to all her fingernails, which lead to her hand, which lead to HER WHOLE BODY!!!

Uh oh... Brigid broke her promise!  Her mom called a 'doctor' who gave Brigid a pill and told her to take a bath.  When she came out, the markers had washed off, but Brigid was invisible!!!

Brigid solved her problem by coloring herself with people colors so she wasn't invisible.  Her mom said you can't go through life being a picture.  Brigid said she could, because you'd never believe what she did to her Dad!!!!!

The last page will definitely tickle your funny bone.  Every year, a first grader tries to pull a Brigid.  Even though we read this book the first week of school and talk about how you can never get away with coloring yourself!  It's as obvious as when I dig in the dirt and pretend it didn't happen!!!
